ExerBrain: A Comparison of Positive and Negative Reinforcement in Attention Training Using BCI based Computer Games

Neurofeedback is a specific form of biofeedback, which can be used to improve self-regulation and brain function in various ways. In addition to providing biofeedback through simple graphical interfaces, it is possible to use computer games. These games are more attractive that can increase the sense of participation to improve the training process. This research uses neurofeedback training algorithms in form of a computer game. By designing and implementing a game called “ExerBrain”, this paper aims to assess the effect of using positive (reward) and negative (punishment) neurofeedback reinforcement attention training. The attention level of each player is gathered through electroencephalogram (EEG) and recorded by the multithread structure of the game. The results of the data analysis revealed that negative reinforcement is effective in attention training for BCI based computer games.
