Recent review articles on human total joint arthroplasty identified that implant loosening remains to be the greatest concern of this generally successful procedure. The initial mechanical stability of the implant is essential for long-term viabilityof the total joint replacement. Numerous clinical and laboratory studies in the human literature have evaluated implant stability; however, information in veterinary literature is quite limited. Unfortunately, data from human literature are not always relevant to veterinary medicine due to differences in anatomy, biomechanics and the required longevity of the prosthesis.
