The equine upper airway is a key point of ventilation at rest and during exercise and resistive breathing (during inhalation or exhalation) at exercise results in abnormal upper respiratory noise, poor performance or both and this varies between breedand also within breed and also with its exact activities. For example, a draft horse in driving competition has different requirements compared to a horse in a pulling competition. Even within a driving competition, the lead horse has far less work demand compared to the other horses in the same hitch.
