Socio-Psychological Behavioral Model of Saving Electric Energy

In order to reduce energy consumption, we must change our lifestyles from energy mass-consumption types to energy-economizing types in addition to innovating green technology. In this paper, socio-psychological behavioral model of electric energy saving is proposed by applying Hirose's hypothesis of environment-conscious behavior. Then, questionnaire survey was conducted at a local area in Osaka Prefecture (Japan), and the data were analyzed by covariance structure analysis. In conclusion, the behavioral model has been proved to be valid, which means as follows: there are two phases to decide to save electric energy; the first is a phase where people cognize the electricity-shortage problem and the second is a phase where people decide to save electric energy. In addition, "individual benefits/costs" has the greatest influence on decision of saving electric energy, and "social norms" and "cognition of problem" are followed.
