In this paper, we study the scientific preparation and application of the modified Luffa Sponge (LS) as carrier in wastewater treatment process, and the effects of surface modification and removal of pollutant were investigated. Results showed that the hydrophobic modified LS fiber after Fe~(3+) and ozone (in the air) treatment could achieve a contact angle of 113.4°, and it was a highly suitable filler due to its high microbial biofilm-forming ability and prolonged service life. Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) images also showed that the modified LS fiber sacrifices surface area to some extent for a stable and not easily degraded structure. The modified LS fiber showed high performance in the removal of COD_(Cr), but low performance in the removal of TN and TP. Irrespective of the modification state, the LS fiber in a ditch system has a significant effect on its treatment.
