The multilevel converter, based on full-bridge sub-module, has certain technical advantage in solving DC side fault problem of the converter and has a good engineering application prospect. However, its loss problem is also outstanding. This article, through analysis of full-bridge sub-module loss and safety margin analysis of components, proposes a new type of full-bridge loss optimized modulation strategy, which carries out modulation for the full-bridge sub-module in two stages, balancing the thermal stress of each semiconductor switching components in the full-bridge sub-module and improving power transmission capability of the modular multilevel converter (MMC). Simulation analysis verifies the effectiveness of the proposed full-bridge loss optimized modulation strategy.
