Radiofrequency catheter ablation (RFCA) has largely replaced antiarrhythmic drug therapy for the treatment of various cardiac arrhythmias in human medicine.1 Its high success rate against certain supraventricular tachyarrhythmias makes RFCA an attractive therapy option, also eliminating issues surrounding medication administration and untoward drug side effects. In veterinary medicine, paroxysmal atrioventricular reciprocating tachycardia attributed to an accessory atrioventricular pathway is a common indication for RFCA in dogs.2"1 Although many affected dogs respond well to medical management, RFCA is a good option in the setting of poor owner compliance, inadequate arrhythmia control despite drug therapy, intolerable drug side effects, and pet owners looking to avoid lifelong drug administration. Although the use of RFCA for supraventricular tachycardia in clinical canine patients is well-documented,3-6 this treatment remains uncommon in veterinary medicine due to cost and limited availability of electrophysiology (EP) equipment and expertise.
