A fleet of 200MW-class steam power plants runs with low efficiency and increasing maintenance cost. In case of Poland that fleet constitutes approx. 30% of the conventional generation. Utilities are obliged either to invest in sophisticated flue gas cleaning systems or to decommission those units, soon. A recently developed concept of 2on1 unit presented in the paper gives an answer to this owners’ dilemma. The efficiency level needs to be as high as possible but at least covering the new OECD rules that require Ultra Super Critical (USC) steam conditions. Raising the level from 34% to well above 43% reduces CO2 emissions by more than 20% as a contribution to the 2°C climate target that was decided in Paris in December 2015. New power plants are flexible to balance out the constantly increased renewable fraction of electric power which is unpredictable by its nature. Therefore primary and secondary frequency control, fast load ramps and low part loads become essential. Finally the economic value shall be given by reduced costs for the replacement. For low land consumption that is a benefit for environment, budget and related schedule. Old facilities can be upgraded with advanced components using the available infrastructure such as el. grid connection, coal handling, existing buildings, ash handling and cooling systems while keeping available permits. Summarizing from an aged 2x200MW-class SPP a state of the art 1x500MW-class power plant with outstanding flexibility and efficiency arises. Rafako as Boiler Manufacturer, Energoprojekt Katowice as Plant Engineering Company and Siemens as Steam Turbine Generator Manufacturer introduce their joint concept.
