Research on Pool Fire Behaviors in Wind - State of the Art and Future Challenges

This paper provides a review of the state of art on pool fire behaviors in wind as well as future challenges. The burning behaviors of pool fire in still air (burning rate, heat feedback mechanisms, flame geometry, radiation properties, etc.) have been relatively thoroughly investigated by previous researchers in the past decades. However, with the presence of a wind, the burning behaivor will be remarkably different from those of pool fires in still air. As a result, the heat feedback mechanism, burning rate, flame tilt angle, flame length and flame base drag of pool fire evolves with wind. Previous researches about the evolutions of these quantities with wind speed are reviewed in this paper, however, there are still some important aspects to be answered. This review also summarized some future challenges, such as the evolutions of heat feedback mechanism and burning rate of large radiation-controlled pool fire, soot production and irradiance properties in wind, etc.
