HYDROVISION 2017 –DENVER, COLORADO, USA DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS FOR THE CAPILANO ENERGY RECOVERY FACILITY AND BREAK HEAD TANK (PPT)

The Capilano Break Head Tank is located at the Capilano reservoir in North Vancouver and provides a controlled terminus for the Treated Water return tunnel from a new filter plant at Seymour reservoir to its origin at Capilano. The facility is designed to dissipate the pressure from the gravity fed tunnel prior to discharge into the Capilano supply main, and act as a stable head pond for the potable water distribution system for the City of Vancouver. An energy recovery hydro-turbine was installed to generate electrical energy to displace load at the adjacent pump station. Design considerations for the facility and the energy recovery turbine are discussed in this paper.
