Long tunnel inspections can be a challenge for traditional umbilical powered ROVs. For some applications, especially those involving penetrations over 15,000ft, there are distinct advantages to replacing umbilical power with a design that incorporates vehicle-mounted batteries. This presentation will describe “Titan,” a custom-built vehicle designed for performing an inspection of over 30,000ft of a potable water tunnel, under battery power. To position cameras and lights around the periphery of a large (16 foot) diameter tunnel so as to achieve optimum video coverage, Titan used a custom-built set of booms that open inside of the tunnel much like an umbrella. The system harvested energy from the water flow to provide propulsion over the long penetration distance without the need for shutdown of the plant and to minimize battery power requirements.
