The diaphragm spring is a key element in the clutch assembly. It can reduce the gearbox size and weight compared with coil spring. Two diaphragm springs are selected to replace the coil springs in the clutch of a planetary gearbox. In the paper one diaphragm spring is designed through calculation. The finite element model coupled with rigid model of the diaphragm spring is built. Through applying boundary and initial conditions, the rigid-flexible coupling analysis is made under the clutch operation conditions. In order to show the correlation of analysis result with that of design calculation, they are compared with each other and good correspondence of load and deflection characteristic is found. The key point stress of diaphragm spring is under the limitation of the yield stress. The calculation and analysis method in the paper is a good way for diaphragm spring design selection and a proper reference for its manufacture process.
