Southeast Asia is one of the largest emerging economic blocs and comprises some of the largest and fastest growing middle-income countries in the world. With strong growth is expected to continue into the future, and regional GDP projected to grow at 5% per year through 2025, the demand for power is expected to continue to grow rapidly. Such rapid growth in electricity demand requires a strategy for capacity build-out that balances affordable fossil-fuel-based energy with sustainability and environmental commitment. To the benefit of both the environment and the regional economies, the falling cost of variable renewable energy (VRE) resources (solar photovoltaics (PV), in particular) is making investment in these technologies more attractive, and large-scale VRE development is generally increasing in Southeast Asia countries.
