ELG Compliance: Pilot Testing Alternate Technologies

Compliance with the revised Effluent Limitation Guidelines (ELG) rules will require treatment of wet flue gas desulfurization (WFGD) wastewater for removal of arsenic, mercury, selenium, and nitrates. There are many new and developing technologies that may be available to treat the wastewater for ELG compliance. Although physical / chemical treatment has been used to treat WFGD wastewater in the industry for many years, there is limited experience with use of biological treatment and thermal evaporative treatment technologies and very little experience with alternative treatment technologies to treat WFGD wastewater. Economic evaluations of the potential treatment technologies might point to a solution with little to no industry experience. Pilot testing becomes essential to properly evaluate how the treatment technology will perform. This presentation will talk about setting up, running, and evaluating pilot treatment units and provides some recommendations for consideration.
