One through USC CFB technology has more complicated erection process compared to PC boiler technology in points of further site welding points, additional erection works for solid separator and refractory lining. In hot commissioning phase, KOSPO faced the challenging difficulties in optimizing operation concept due to unexpected low-rank coal characteristics (high-moisture contents, fine dust and etc.) but overcame them with erection contractor and supplier. In the end, the COD was accomplished in many trial and errors and cooperation in operation of first advanced large scale USC CFB boilers. Also KOSPO made a lot of efforts to convince passive contractor to solve trouble-shooting problems caused by design and installation mistakes. CFB boilers in Samcheok have showed their satisfactory guaranteed performance in steam flow rate, thermal efficiency and NOx, SOx emissions based on contractual guaranteed value. However, CFB technology based large power units have to be improved in unit operational load range and load change rate as requested by electric power grid dispatch center. Samcheok Boilers are designed to use 5%-heat input of biomass as a maximum, currently KOSPO are installing the conveying system for the biomass-wood pellet into operation August 2018. KOSPO expects that Samcheok Units based on CFB boilers play an important role in Korean power business like fuel flexibility in response to future variable coal price. Please keep an eye on KOSPO and Samcheok, which is leading the power company and contributing to global ecofriendly energy market.
