Site Specific Seismic Input for Structures on Hill Slopes

Earthquake is one of the most unpredictable natural phenomenon since time immemorial. The world has faced many devastating earthquakes in the past causing huge destruction to structures and slopes, resulting in loss of lives to thousands. With development comes new structures. To make sure that structures will withstand future earthquakes, proper design force is a necessity. The design force varies from region to region as it depends on various factors like the geology, tectonics, topography, etc. This paper deals on how to take care of design forces when constructing structures on hillslopes since in many developing countries, due to unavailability of flat land, structures are constructed on hillslopes. Site specific geophysical investigation to find the shear wave velocity are conducted on hillslopes at trans-Himalayan region of the capital city of Mizoram, Aizawl, and thus site specific ground response for the same is found and compared with current codal provisions.
