This review states slow release fertilizers' effective promotion in petroleum bioremediation on oil spill coasts, and its advantages of high efficiency, environmental friendliness and low cost. Important factors influencing nutrient release mechanism in beach environment are discussed, including structure, temperature, moisture, microorganism, pH value and salinity. It is highlighted that three preconditions are necessary to purify oil spill coast using slow release fertilizers: abundant and available petroleum-degrading microorganisms, appropriate nutrient background concentration, and adequate dissolved oxygen supply. Although slow release fertilizers have made significant progress in purifying oil spill coast, challenges still exist, including fertilizers' great behavioral differences when applied to different beach environments, the data inconsistency between laboratory and field, etc. In future research, we shall take full account of and simulate complicated and diverse factors of the open beach environment, and design fertilizer formulas for different site environments.
