This paper describes smart and connected ship technology, using ship performance monitoring as a recurrent illustrative application. Simulations ("virtual sea trials") contribute to the hydrodynamic knowledge base replacing conventional model tests. On-board sensor data and AIS data ("big data") are combined for complementary insight and cross-referencing. Challenges such as data swamping, market scepticism and misconception are discussed, along with roadmaps for overcoming these challenges.
