Circular Economy (CE) has many non-linearly interlinked dimensions. In order to fully understand the economic viability of the CE within the so many dimensions, environmental impact and associated risks as well as the losses from the system must be understood and quantified so as to be able to economically evaluate viability. In a first step to understand the CE system and its link to modular product design, Fairphone examined the end-of-life phase of its latest smartphone (Fairphone 2) by applying HSC Sim simulation software from Outotecto understand the phone's recyclability index, system environmental footprint (i.e. life cycle assessment LCA), energy recovery as well as exergetic efficiency, which includes thermoeconomics. This paper will discuss this trailblazing unique innovative step by Fairphone, leading the way among the OEMs. This paper will show the challenges of reaching the great goals of the Circular Economy.
