Majority of ignition coils manufactured by large OEM comes from dedicated potting line with high throughput and low flexibility. Aftermarket specialized companies like Standard Motor Products (SMP) are looking for the flexible manufacturing solutions so on limited number of potting lines, whole range of ignition coils can be manufactured and supplied to the market. There are four major types of ignition coils varying greatly per weight of epoxy used to impregnate high and low voltage coils, with rail and pencil types are the two product extremes influencing thermal mass while gelation and curing. Aftermarket also requires good application coverage, so basic manufacturing Companies like SMP have to release per year good number of coils to maintain the coverage percentage. Different and varying coil to coil design requires guidelines on potting so products passing validation testing in one go. Both aspects mentioned above are presented in the paper below.
