Mobile Gas Turbine Power: The Solution to Increasing Power Demand and Environmental Regulations in Well Stimulation (PPT)

Exploration and production (E&P) companies are exploring ways to utilize natural gas turbine technologies into their well stimulation services operations, seeking cost savings and a reduced environmental footprint. The surge in natural gas supply brought on by the maturation of horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing has spurred interest in engines and systems that are purpose built to operate in Pressure Pumping Service (PPS) applications. Gas Turbines are successfully being used in PPS in the Marcellus and DJ Basin shale plays and could be deployed in other shale plays in the future. Of particular focus is the Taurus 60 gas turbine, manufactured by Solar Turbines. The Taurus 60 is available as a Mobile Power Unit (MPU); a prepackaged mobile system that allows an operator to transport and set-up a 5.7 MW gas turbine generator via two semi-tractors. The Taurus 60 MPU is the prototypical gas turbine when evaluating benefits of turbines for PPS.
