Implementation of Plant Reliability Optimization Mississippi Power Co Plant Chevron Cogen

Mississippi Power Company, MPC, owns and operates a five unit Cogen plant known as Chevron Cogen that supplies power and steam to the Chevron Refinery in Pascagoula, MS. The Cogen plant started producing power and steam in 1968 with only two units. Since then the Cogen plant has grown to a total of five units and two water treatment plants capable of producing approximately 145 mw/hour of electricity, 855,000 pounds/hour of steam, and 1.2 million gallons per day of demineralized water. The units consist of four GE Model 5001R/NT gas turbines and one Alstom GT-11N1 with EV Burner gas turbine. All units have Heat Recovery Steam Generators (HRSG) made by Deltak (2), Struthers-Wells (2), or Vogt (1). The Struthers-Wells HRSG’s are the only HRSG’s on site designed and built with supplemental firing capacity. For this site customer reliability and cost are of the highest importance. The electrical load is backed up by the Southern Company electrical grid whereas the steam load cannot be. The steam is transported directly to the Chevron Refinery for their use in the refining processes.
