The implementation of in-tank inspections on power transformers and reactors as one of the measures to enhance asset management

Asset management of transformers refers to a defined process of specifying, realizing, deploying, operating, maintaining, life-extending and disposing of the transformers cost-effectively. This paper primarily focuses on larger power transformers used within the Eskom high voltage transmission network. The term transformers or power transformers is inclusive of the electrical power reactors except if stated otherwise. In the past, the deploying phase like the other pre-commissioning phases, was given least attention and almost ignored. The starting point of transformer life management was considered to be at the start of operation, yet lots of activities happen prior to that stage. In addition when doing intrusive work, trust was being given to the people performing the activities and in turn unintentionally overlooking the quality and thereby remaining vulnerable to human errors during critical intrusive maintenance.
