We are investigating the use of a multi-spectral sensor mounted on a UAS platform for monitoring ecological restoration success in sagebrush shrubland, pinyon-juniper woodland, riparian galleries, and high-altitude wetland ecosystems. We used a variety of methods for estimating vegetation on the ground, and several image analysis approaches for estimating vegetation remotely. We have demonstrated that this emerging technology is effective and efficient. There will be a large number of beneficiaries following implementation of rigorous quantitative monitoring programs, including developers and industry, regulatory agencies and landowners, and the general public. Wildlife and natural ecosystems will also benefit from the improvements in ecological restoration that will be facilitated by this approach.
