Oxalic acid with FARADAYIC Stripping has shown potential for stripping chrome coatings without producing Cr~(+6) or damaging the steel surface. Client restrictions required changing the focus to direct reduction of Cr~(+6) to Cr~(+3) in a separate tank. Reduction in the presence of a chrome-coated anode does not affect Cr~(+6) already in solution. Use of a Au-Pd-Cu cathode and PRC waveform demonstrated feasibility of Cr~(+6) to Cr~(+3) reduction and subsequent precipitation of Cr(OH)_3. Future work will optimize and scale-up this process.
