The objective of the study was to develop a treatment method for mine site tailings to simultaneously leach and recover valuable metals, and to remove negative environmental effects and risks related to tailings. An inventory of historic and currently produced tailings in Finland was completed. Tailings samples for bioleaching studies were received from several mines in Finland. Microbial communities from mine water samples were enriched for bioleaching experiments. The bioleaching experiments have shown potential for tailings valorisation for new value creation out of current waste material.
