This paper provides design aspects of coreless axial flux permanent magnet generators for low cost wind power applications. Such wind turbines are particularly suitable for rural electrification projects. Specific parameters of the design are studied w.r.t. their influence on the overall cost, weight and volume of the generator using a MATLAB model. Such parameters are the pole arc to pole pitch ratio, the inner to outer radius ratio and the winding fill factor. In addition, their influence on the performance of the generator is considered, as expressed by the efficiency and the total harmonic distortion (THD) of the induced EMF waveform. A 3kW generator for connection to the grid is designed, simulated and tested in the laboratory for demonstration purposes.
