For sports lighting, HID floodlighting is gradually being replaced with LED lighting. Some LED retrofit projects, however, have been the target of criticism regarding glare which blinds players and prevents them from being able to follow targets that pass directly in front of the luminaire. Although conventional HID floodlights also include high luminance components, LED floodlights are said to cause more glare than HID floodlights. The final goal of this study is to propose a method to evaluate glare in sports lighting. As a preliminary study, this paper addresses two issues. One is establishing the validity of using digital camera systems to measure floodlight luminance. The other is establishing an evaluation procedure for field measurements. We concluded that high-resolution camera systems are required for accurate measurements. Luminance values of flood lights were successfully obtained in pilot measurements, but the difference between the luminance of LED and HID floodlights remains inconclusive.
