Practical experience shows that electrical equipment in oil and gas facilities is generally designed above specification and does not operate at or near its most efficient point. Overrated electrical equipment increases both CAPEX and OPEX and can potentially increase global warming. This paper presents different scenarios and solutions for the rating and sizing of electrical equipment from a design perspective to achieve an efficient and cost effective operational electrical system. Standard equipment de-rating factors is discussed and evaluated against actual system requirements.
