The variety of headlamp systems has dramatically increased during the last years. In addition to well established halogen- and HID-headlamps, many different LED-headlamps and even laser-solutions have appeared. Consequently, headlamp design and headlamp requirements have changed. Within this paper, we want to show that "classical" HID technology can still be enhanced for the sector. For that purpose we explore the effects induced by smaller arc gaps in automotive HID lamps. Surprising result is: The resulting short arc D9S lamp not only competes in this dynamic automotive market with "modern" light source technologies - it even sets new benchmark-standards for light sources for headlamp application.
