To study whether raised bog restoration measures rehabilitate fauna diversity, we compared invertebrate species assemblages between pristine, degraded, and rewetted raised bogs The relative abundance of species preferring ombrotrophic conditions was generally low in both the degraded and rewetted bog sites, whereas species preferring situations with a higher nutrient availability within pristine bogs were dominant. The high nutrient availability in Dutch bog remnants is likely to hamper restoration of the fauna species assemblages of nutrient-poor bog pools. Still, water bodies in degraded raised bogs that are not influenced by (large-scale) rewetting measures are inhabited by relatively high numbers of characteristic invertebrate species. Next to nutrient availability, permanence of water bodies, habitat heterogeneity, and sudden changes induced by large-scale rewetting measures are important factors in the occurrence and survival of characteristic bog species.
