Due to the problems concerning the rewetting and restoration of intensive cultivated fens in Northeastern Germany, in particular of the shallow fens, it is to be expected, that mineralization leads to the development of post-fen soils. A definition of mineral post-fen soils includes all former fens, the actual peat layer of which has a thickness less than 3 dm, respectively the top soils of which have an organic matter decreased below 30 % of weight. In comparison with fens, differences in physical (dry bulk density, pore size distribution, water retention function) and chemical properties (organic matter content, potential cation exchange capacity) of the mineral post-fen soils are represented. In addition, on the basis of the analysis of maps, presenting the peat thicknesses of a large fen area, the expected allocation of mineral post-fen soils is discussed.
