Unsteady flows caused by rotor-stator interactions are investigated using particle image velocimetry (PIV) method in an axial pump.The pump is designed with rotor with splitters and tandem vanes and the rotor-stator gap is able to be varied.Unsteady flows with ttuee cases of the axial gaps (far, mid and close) between rotor and stator are recorded.Both absolute and relative velocity fields are presented and analyzed.Results indicate that the rotor flows fluctuate obviously for the blade interaction while the stator flows are not sensitive to it.As the blade axial gap increases, the unsteadiness caused by the interaction is weakened.The rotor-stator gap variation also significantly effects the boundary layer development of the downstream stator.
