Performance-based approaches provide an opportunity to implement system reliability-, redundancy-,risk-, and sustainability-informed concepts into life-cycle design and assessment of deteriorating infrastructure systems.In this context, this paper presents a framework for applying these concepts in structural design,assessment, and management of civil infrastructure, in a life-cycle perspective.The main aspects related to probabilistic performance assessment and prediction, in addition to optimal management planning of deteriorating structural systems, are discussed.Overall, risk-based performance metrics provide the means to combine the probability of structural failure with the consequences corresponding to this event.Methodologies which incorporate risk within a generalized life-cycle management framework are presented herein.Furthermore, approaches considering sustainability as a performance indicator are discussed.Finally,approaches for structural performance assessment and prediction involving multi-attribute utility theory accounting for the decision maker's risk attitude are investigated.
