Eu~(3+) doped BiPO_4 red phosphor was prepared by hydrothermal method using C_2H_6O_2 as dispersant. The structure and composition of the samples were characterized by IR and XRD. The results showed that with the increase of hydrothermal temperature and hydrothermal time, the crystal structure of BiPO_4 changed from hexagonal phase to monoclinic phase. The luminescence properties of Eu~(3+) doped BiPO_4 were characterized by excitation spectra and emission spectra. The results showed that both monoclinic phase phosphor and hexagonal phase phosphor can be light emitting. Different crystal structures of Eu~(3+) doped BiPO_4 samples had the same emission peaks in emission spectra excited by blue light wavelength of 395nm. The emission peaks respectively corresponded to the ~5D_0→~7F_1 transition at 590nm and ~5D_0→~7F_2 transition at 614nm of Eu~(3+). The luminescence intensity of monoclinic phase Eu~(3+) doped BiPO_4 was significantly stronger than the hexagonal phase sample's luminescence intensity.
