Diagnostic TechniquesThe most common diseases of the guttural pouches are empyema, tympany, mycosis, and temporohyoid osteoarthropathy (THO). Rarer diseases include neoplasia, fractured stylohyoid bone, nasopharyngeal obstruction, foreign bodies, cysts, and rupture of the ventral straight muscles of the head. Although new diagnostic methods have considerably facilitated diagnosis, endoscopy of the guttural pouch remains the gold standard for most guttural pouch diseases.
