Lymphoma is one of the most common cancers diagnosed in dogs, and resembles non-Hodgkin lymphoma in humans. The risk for developing lymphoma has been linked in humans to industrial waste and environmental pollutants, to include chlorinated hydrocarbons,1 benzene,2 various pesticides,3 urea herbicides, and triazole fungicides. 4Comparable environmental risks have been documented in dogs with lymphoma, although there are relatively few studies. Demonstrated risk factors include exposure to pesticides,5 household chemical use (especially paints and solvents),6 and living in industrial areas or in proximity to polluted sites.6,1 One group also reported an association between the commonly used broad leaf herbicide 2,4-dichlorophenoxy acetic acid (2,4-D) and canine lymphoma,8'9 but these results were quite controversial and were refuted by other researchers. 10,11Overall, these findings suggest a possible causal relationship between exposure to certain environmental chemicals and lymphoma in dogs. However, it is unclear which chemicals are important and what other factors may modulate risk with exposure.
