Canada's new pig code

This paper will outline the Canadian approach to meeting the standard of care and welfare of pigs through the development of a Code of Practice for the care and handling of farmed pigs. More information about the Canadian Code of Practice for Pigs canbe found at www.nfacc/codes-of-practice.I will start by disclosing three key things I believe to be true. Truth 1: many groups and organizations have an interest in animal welfare. Truth 2: the understanding of the science, expectation and application of animal welfare continues to evolve, regardless of species group. Truth 3: the rate of evolution is different for all of the various interested parties, depending on perspective, culture, level of involvement in agriculture, etc. The Canadian approach to animal welfare has tried to take advantage of these truths in order to enhance the care and welfare of animals in Canada. Although I have not been directly involved in the development of the Code of Practice for Pigs, as a keen observer, can assure the process was not easy, considering the various stakeholders around the table.
