Influence of caretaker preferences and implementation of protocols on use of carbon-dioxide gas for piglet euthanasia

The swine veterinary community is responsible for educating the industry on proper euthanasia practices. C02 euthanasia systems are complex and understanding them requires a knowledge of both physiology and airflow mechanics. It has become increasingly important to determine how these systems should be designed, used and implemented because caretaker morale and aesthetic concerns have caused many producers to move away from blunt force trauma for piglet euthanasia. This study examined current systemcomponents and use in addition to the influence of caretaker perception on adoption of CO_2 gas euthanasia.
