BS 8233: 2014, its predecessor BS 8233: 1999 and the now withdrawn PPG 24 all require the assessment of noise levels in the form of the L_(Aeq.16hour) and L_(Aeq.8hour) to determine whether a proposed development site is suitable for residential use and to determine the level of mitigation required to provide suitable internal noise levels.
