By combining opportunistic relaying (OR) with the N~(th) best relay selection and hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ), a novel high spectral efficiency OR-HARQ scheme is proposed. In the proposed OR-HARQ scheme, the best relay is always selected to forward the current new signal to destination, and the non-best relay is selected for retransmitting the previous signal. Then, by using maximal ratio combining (MRC), the destination attempts to recover the source signal by combining the retransmitted signal and the previous signal transmitted via the best relay. The simulations show that the presented OR-HARQ scheme can greatly improve the spectral efficiency of OR systems.
