CHALLENGES OF ICT SOLUTIONS: SMES WITHIN THE HEALTHCARE SECTOR-A NIGERIAN CASE STUDY

The drive to optimize the benefits of information systems (IS) in developing countries has led to the increasing use of information and communication technology (ICT) to provide solutions whilst exploiting technological advances. In recent years governments across West Africa have utilized ICT to improve healthcare delivery. Whilst improvements in health statistics have been recorded there is evidence that some 'soft' issues impact significantly upon the efficacy of ICT solutions thereby reducing or limiting their value. Our exploratory case study identifies a number of specific challenges facing SMEs adopting ICT solutions that influence the level of value realized. We put forward a model of recommendations for SMEs in the healthcare sector to achieve optimal benefit from ICT investment.
