New technology will increase reliance upon energy storage components. The new functions will bring greater expectation upon the robustness and consistency of electrical power systems and, therefore, of energy storage devices. Existing standard tests and data, whilst very useful, will not support this expectation. Application engineering processes will have to be revised and will require: 1. Energy storage performance data over a wider range of conditions. 2. An improved method of lifetime assessment. 3. Information regarding degradation trends and failure indicators. Co-operation between application engineers and suppliers will be essential. 1. Application engineers to define key performance targets and use cases. 2. Suppliers to provide more or improved characteristic and trend data.
