Recycled board mills of the 1960's and 70's in North America used small holes (0.125" to 0.25" diameter) in pulpers to reduce contaminants going forward in the system allowing screening systems of that time to operate without plugging. As improvements were made in screening technology by the use of new profile screen baskets and screen rotors, the pulper extraction hole size was increased. This was followed by improvements in pulper detrashing. Today's waste paper recycling systems traditionally include process modules for pulping, detrashing, high density cleaning, coarse screening, fine screening, and centrifugal cleaning stages. These process modules require numerous tanks, pumps, and control loops to operate which results in higher installation, maintenance, and operating costs. In addition increased costs for raw material and rejects handling demands maximizing the efficiency of the recycled system important to recycled pulp mills in today's environment.
