Torrefied biomass is estimated to be composed of approximately 80% solid material (sugars, polymers, char and ash), 12% volatile liquids (heavy hydrocarbons and lipids), 5% non-condensable volatile gases (CO2, CO, CH4, H2, trace VOCs) and 3% water.. Characteristics that make torrefied wood desirable as a fuel source also make it a safety hazard.
