A key driver in the Pulp & Paper Industry is to reduce the consumption of freshwater given the scarcity of this resource in many regions. Conventional treatment of feed water sources involves costs due to chemical treatment and labor hours for maintaining the system. More important, the effluent may still contain significant amounts of biological contamination and suspended solids making it unsuitable for cooling tower or boiler feed-water. In contrast, Microfiltration (MF) membrane technology in combination with Reverse Osmosis (RO) is an efficient and cost effective solution for clarifying incoming water reliably and consistently. In this paper, the author will discuss how MF/RO technology can provide an environmentally friendly solution by lowering freshwater consumption and reducing the amount of wastewater that is generated.
