The lumen and media-adventitia border's detection of vascular wall is a key step in intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) processing. Snake model has become increasingly widespread in medical image segmentation. As we know, an accurate selection of initial contour plays an essential role in edge extraction based on Snake model. This paper puts forward an improved Snake model for extracting the edge of vascular wall. During the Snake's youth stage, we present a new initialization algorithm to locate the Snake's initial position. During the snake's growth stage, we give an improved internal energy E_(int) to add a centripetal force which will locate the contours of the target more accurately. The experimental results confirmed the validity of this improved model for IVUS images' segmentation.
