Construction of Enciso Dam

Enciso RCC dam is at present under construction in the Ebro river basin in northern Spain.The main purpose of the project is to guarantee the irrigation and water supply to the local community.The dam is 103 m high and the total volume of RCC is about 800 000 m3.Although the project has suffered several interruptions along its preliminary construction phases,the RCC placement could be planned as a continuous activity with a total duration of 10 months split in four (4) stages due to the winter and summer breaks.In the first stage some 170 000 m3 were placed in 2.5 months in the autumn of 2014 and the second stage has been completed recently (June 2015) reaching 50％ of the total RCC volume.This article describes the RCC construction aspects of the project.The mix design development and quality control issues are analysed in a separate work published in this same Symposium.In this second paper special attention will be paid to the description of the plant capacity and the logistics required for a continuous placement.The concept of the RCC mix that is being used at Enciso benefits from this continuity at high construction rates,and subsequently improves both quality and economy.The aspects related with the RCC placement is another main topic in this article.Innovation through the use of an immersion vibrated RCC (Ⅳ-RCC) mix has simplified the placement activities to a great extent.Aspects describing this positive experience will be presented including specific construction procedures for good Ⅳ-RCC practice.
