OPEN COOLING WATER CHEMISTRY GUIDELINES

EPRI published the Open Cooling Water Chemistry Guideline in September 2012 to update and expand upon guidance dating to the mid-1990s and to support improved chemistry control within open cooling water chemistry systems. The previous guideline, Service Water System Chemical Addition Guideline, provided information related to selection and application of treatment chemicals in service water systems. The new guidance encompasses all aspects important to chemistry control within these systems, including design, materials, and chemical application. It also includes guidelines for other open cooling systems, including circulating water systems and cooling towers. The guideline document was reviewed and revised through a committee comprised of both nuclear and fossil power plant representatives, from both U.S. and non-U.S. utilities. This composition afforded ample opportunity for capturing relevant field experience, which is documented in sections on Troubleshooting, Industry Operating Experience, and Industry Best Practices. The new guideline also provides users with an excellent fundamental resource for cooling water chemistry. It addresses the range of challenges related to various corrosion mechanisms, types of biofouling, and scaling mechanisms, and introduces the reader to the treatment and control options available for these threats. This paper will describe the open cooling chemistry control guidance provided in this new document.
