In the 1980s there were many slow crack growth (SCG) and rapid crack propagation (RCP) "shattering" events in exposed high density polyethylene (HDPE) geomembranes at low temperatures. The material that we know has a yield point and high elongation at break will crack instantaneously in a brittle manner over several thousands of square meters in area. Improved PE resins have reduced the frequency of RCP shattering, but have not eliminated it. In this paper four shattering events are reviewed, three of which have occurred in the past three years; one during installation and another after 15 months in service. In addition to a stress, the rate of application of that stress determines whether SCG or RCP shattering (and its extent) occurs. Steps that can be taken to minimize the potential for shattering are presented.
